Itinerary

- Local pickups en route – as confirmed in your final confirmation details (issued 7 to 14 days before departure)
- Today we travel to the Dunoon Hotel, Llandudno. We cannot guarantee that the gourmet experience will extend to the menus provided for groups but nevertheless its’ a good base to start from.
- We’ll have at least two refreshment stops including a longer stop for lunch during the journey.
- This morning we visit the beautiful National Trust gardens at Bodnant which overlook the Conwy Valley and feature many Rhododendrons and Azaleas as well as a famous Laburnum archway. The usual National Trust offices are provided and there will be time for you to have lunch here.
- In the afternoon we make the short journey to Bodnant Welsh Foods – set up to highlight all that’s best from the Welsh kitchen. A tour of the facility is included and a demonstration of the making of Bara Brith followed by a light cream tea is included.
- “The North Wales Relaxer” – today is your chance to, well, relax. Spend the day in Llandudno – perhaps visit the pier, stroll along the prom, or take the electric tramway to the summit of Great Orm. If you feel more adventurous the train can take you to Conwy for architectural extremes from the extensive castle to what is claimed to be the smallest house in Britain. The choice is yours….
- Travelling through the spectacular Snowdonia National Park our first destination is the Italianate village of Portmeirion. The creation of architect William Clough-Ellis this picturesque village will whisk you away to the Italian riviera as you wander though it’s streets and gardens. Famous as the set for the filming of The Prisoner, you’ll soon see why Portmeirion is a perennial favourite.
- From Portmeirion we move on to Porthmadog, once an important port for the export of slate from the quarries at Blaenau Ffestiniog. Today it’s tourists which provide the town’s income. There’s plenty of shops and cafés.
- Then in the afternoon we assemble at Harbour Station – the home of the Ffestiniog Railway – one of, if not the, premier narrow gauge steam railway in the UK. With it’s unusual double Fairlie locomotives* – there’s a chimney at each end – one of which may take our train up the hillside to the slate mining capital of the UK at Blaenau Ffestiniog. Look out for the Hydro Electric Pumped Storage Scheme which meant a new tunnel had to bored in the 1980s, the spiral to allow the tarin to gain height and the enormous piles of slate waste surrounding the town and taken form the extensive quarries. (* other locomotives are used on the line and may pull your train).
- Sadly it’s time to head for home – check out and luggage loading details will be provided.
- We’ll journey straight home but there will be at least two refreshment stops.
- Updated return times will be available from the crew during the homeward journey. Anticipated return time to the Norwich area around 17:00-17:30.
